Examples
Example 1: MPG to L/100km (US to European)
A US car buyer reads a European review rating a car at 6.5 L/100km.
What is that in US MPG?
Input: 6.5 L/100km
Conversions:
6.5 L/100km = 36.2 US MPG
6.5 L/100km = 43.4 UK MPG
6.5 L/100km = 15.4 km/L
Formula: US MPG = 235.215 / L/100km
235.215 / 6.5 = 36.2 MPG
Example 2: US MPG vs UK MPG Difference
A car rated at 40 US MPG:
US gallon = 3.785 liters
UK gallon = 4.546 liters
40 US MPG = 33.3 L/100km... wait, let's recalculate:
40 US MPG = 235.215 / 40 = 5.88 L/100km
40 US MPG = 48.0 UK MPG (UK gallon is 20% larger)
40 US MPG = 17.0 km/L
⚠ Important: UK MPG and US MPG are NOT directly comparable.
A car rated "40 MPG" in the UK gets only 33.3 US MPG.
Always check which gallon standard is being used.
Example 3: Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculation
Trip: 500 miles in a car getting 32 US MPG
Fuel price: $3.50 per gallon
Fuel needed: 500 miles ÷ 32 MPG = 15.6 gallons
Fuel cost: 15.6 × $3.50 = $54.69
Same trip in Europe (800 km, 7.5 L/100km, €1.80/L):
Fuel needed: 800 km × 7.5 L/100km ÷ 100 = 60 liters
Fuel cost: 60 × €1.80 = €108.00
